Speaker Series – Interstitial lung disease: Moving from secondary to primary prevention

This publication summarises presentations by Associate Professor Gary M. Hunninghake and Dr John Mackintosh at the TSANZSRS 2025 in Adelaide, Australia. Dr Hunninghake describes strategies for preventing early-stage pulmonary fibrosis from progressing to more advanced disease stages. Dr Mackintosh argues for a radical shift in our approach to managing and identifying interstitial lung disease, with a focus on primary preventive treatments and diagnostics, modelled on cardiology.

Dr Hunninghake is Director of the Interstitial Lung Disease Program at BWH, and Associate Professor of Medicine, Harvard Medical School and Dr Mackintosh is a respiratory and lung transplant physician at the Prince Charles Hospital, Brisbane.
